What can Ovrtone do?
Ovrtone is a full DAW for macOS (recording, editing, MIDI, mixing and bouncing) with an AI engineer built in. You make the music. Say how it should sound, and the engineer reads the meters, builds chains from your own AU and VST3 plugins and gain stages them by measurement.
What does the engineer do?
- Say what's wrong, in your words. "Muddy", "thin", "harsh", "make it warm and close". The engineer works out what to change.
- It hears your mix. Peak, true peak, loudness, gain reduction, before and after every plugin, and alerts for clipping, spikes, live inputs and plugins that look like demos. It mixes by measurement, never by screenshots.
- It builds in your DAW. Plugins on your channels, sends and returns for reverb and delay, settings you can see and change.
- It gain stages. The targets it works to: vocal peaks of −10 to −6 dBFS into the chain, each plugin's output within 1 dB of its input, compressors at sensible gain reduction. How gain staging works.
- You stay in charge. Bigger changes come as a plan you hear first: A and B at the same loudness, then apply it or don't. Every change is one undo step, and it asks before anything destructive.
- Ask for a plugin, get one. It writes, builds, measures and loads new plugins on request (on Pro, Studio and the license).
Does it use my plugins?
- Yes: AU and VST3, scanned and checked. They run outside the engine, in a helper process, so a crashing plugin can't take your session down. One that crashes runs on its own from then on.
- Your own plugins first; stock ones only when yours can't do the job, and it says why.
- Ovrtone's own stock plugins: EQ, compressors, de-esser, saturator, delays, reverbs and more, each with a live picture of what it's doing.
Is it a full DAW?
- Recording: several tracks at once, count-in, metronome, punch-in, loop recording and take folders.
- Editing: regions, fades, splits and trims, groups, track stacks.
- MIDI: keyboards and modules, a piano roll and a score editor, software instruments.
- Mixing: a mixer with buses, sends and outputs, a safety limiter on the master.
- Bouncing to WAV, AIFF, FLAC, AAC and ALAC at a loudness target.
Can AI agents drive it?
Yes. Every action in Ovrtone is a command (daw <noun> <verb>) with structured output. The same commands run the app, the command line and an MCP server, so Claude or any MCP client can drive a session, with plans, undo and permission for destructive actions built in.
What do I need to run it?
- A Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later.
- Any Core Audio interface, or the Mac's built-in audio.
- Your AU and VST3 plugins (optional: Ovrtone has its own).
